RELEVANCE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) IN EDUCATION

Abstract

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has become an essential component of modern education systems as it has transformed the educational sector by improving teaching methods, enhancing student engagement and expanding access to knowledge. The integration of ICT in education has transformed traditional teaching methods, improved access to information and enhanced students’ engagement in learning activities. The integration has become one of the most transformative developments in the 21^st century. This opinion paper critically examined the relevance of ICT in education by exploring its contributions to teaching effectiveness, student engagement, accessibility, collaboration and institutional management.  This paper presented a critical and analytical opinion on the relevance of ICT in education, arguing that while ICT has become indispensable in modern pedagogical practice, its effectiveness is not inherent but contingent upon the context of its application. However, challenges such as inadequate ICT infrastructure, limited technical skills among teachers and poor internet connectivity hinder the effective implementation of ICT in education. The paper concluded that ICT must be understood not merely as a technological intervention but as a socio-educational phenomenon whose success depended on human capacity, policy direction and strategic integration into existing educational systems. Thus, the paper recommended increased investment in ICT infrastructure, continuous professional training for teachers and the integration of ICT into educational policies to improve learning outcomes.
