CLIMATE CHANGE AND LIBRARY RESOURCES IN UNIVERSITIES IN EDO STATE, NIGERIA

Abstract

Climate change is a severe threat to the universe resulting from both human activity and uncontrollable natural factors. The weather conditions brought on by climate change are harmful and have a severe impact on the library's resources. Due to carbon emissions and other high industrial waste, the entire planet is therefore vulnerable to the effects of climate change. The primary objective of this study is to examine the awareness of climate change as factor affecting university library resources in Edo State, Nigeria. Data was collected using a descriptive survey design. Check list and structured questionnaire. The study employed a total population of 115 academic/professional and non-professional library staff from three (3) University libraries in Edo State, Nigeria. Data collected were analyzed using frequency counts, percentages (%), mean (X ) and standard deviation (SD). Result reveals that library resources are available in Universities in Edo State with 95.5(95%) availability. There is high level of climate change awareness for library resources in university libraries in Edo State, Nigeria. Climate change-related variables are threats that have direct or indirect impact on library resources. It is expected that librarians should receive constant training on the physical and chemical nature of resources and adequate fund should be provided for the  management of climate change in libraries.
